Winter 2014 Anime Season (Part 2)

12 05 2014

…And here’s part 2! This will count down the top half of the anime’s airing this season as rated by me. Again, this is only anime that I have watched more than 2 episodes of.

Witch Craft Works – 6/10
The only thing that stopped me lumping this show in with Magical Warfare is that WCW is actually kind of funny. Other than that, it’s basically Shakogan no Shana.

Saki 2 – 7/10
Saki is kind of a niche show. It’s about a group of girls who play Mahjong (and not the concentration-style stuff that’s popular over here, but the poker-style type played in Japan) in their school’s high school club. If you liked the first series, this is more of the same, but it requires you to have seen season 1 to know what is going on. I enjoy it, but I don’t expect anybody who doesn’t find non-physical sports interesting to like it.

D-Frag! – 8/10
A slice of life comedy about a group of student in their school’s Game Development Club, despite the fact that they very rarely develop any games. I enjoyed the comedy in this show and the characters are likable and entertaining. If you’re a fan of this genre of show, I highly recommend it.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei – 8/10
Another comedy anime about a high school girl who suddenly finds out that her late grandfather had set up an arranged marriage for her. The boy she is set to marry and his little sister come from their home out in the sticks to live with them in the city. I don’t want to spoil too much about this one, but it takes a bit of a twist along the way. Again, really funny and really entertaining. Recommended.

Chuubiyou Demo Koi ga Shitai Ren – 8/10
This is a series I can’t recommend enough. While, season one is much better, this continues the story of Rikka and her strange fantasy delusions. A slice of life at its core, Chuubiyou has great characters, hilarious antics, and possibly my all time favorite setup for a slice of life.

Tonari no Seki-kun – 9/10
A series of comedy shorts about a girl who keeps getting enthralled by the mischief the boy sitting next to her in class gets up to. The episodes only run about 7-10 min per episode, but they are hilarious.

Nisekoi – 9/10
A comedy about the son of a Yakuza boss and the daughter of a mobster who have to pretend to be dating to keep their families from going to war with each other despite the fact that they can’t stand each other. This goes about as well as you’d expect. And its hilarious.

Kill la Kill – 10/10
Easily one of the best anime of the last year. Kill la Kill started slow, but the second half of the series turned out to be amazing. Twist after twist, episode after episode, a unique animation style, and an incredible soundtrack all work together to make this anime one of the best I’ve seen in a long time.
