Top 5 Vampire Movies That Don’t Suck

19 03 2010

Well, tonight is the midnight release of New Moon on video and in hour of this, I’ve decided to post up my top 5 favorite vampire movies for those of you who want to watch something with a bit less Twilight.

Before I start, I need to give special mention to 2 movies that didn’t make the cut. Van Helsing is an awesome movie, but I just didn’t know if it would really be classified as a vampire movie.  Interview With a Vampire was another good movie, I just felt it dragged on. A lot.

#5) Blood: The Last Vampire (anime movie)
Now there are two versions of this movie, a live action one and an animated one. The anime one is infinitely better than the live action. The special effect elements just don’t translate well into the live action version (probably due to budget constraints) and the story just flows so much better in the anime.

#4) From Dusk Till Dawn
Considered a cult classic, this film from one of my favorite directors, Robert Rodriquez, is hilarious and just plain well done. It features awesome acting performances from George Clooney and Quentin Tarentino. A must see.

#3) 30 Days of Night
Based on a well known graphic novel, this movie is just awesome from all aspects. The vampires in this movie come off more as animals than as people, giving this movie more of a monster movie feel than most of the others.

#2) Blade (Trilogy)
Based on the Marvel character of the same name, the Blade Trilogy is just plain awesome. I’m especially a fan of the third movie (though most people don’t seem to share this sentiment), finding it the perfect blend of action and comedy (due to Ryan Renold’s character being AWESOME).

#1) Underworld (Trilogy)
Best. Vampire. Movies. EVER. Like Twilight, Underworld incorporated both Vampires and Werewolves, but unlike Twilight, Underworld does it well. I don’t think I have any complaints about this series at all and the first film actually is on my top 10 list of favorite movies of all time. If you have not seen this, watch it!

There you have it, my top 5 list of vampire movies that don’t suck. If you want something to watch tonight that doesn’t involve characters named Edward or Bella, these movies may be for you. Check them out.
